Joseph Patrick Kennedy Jr. (July 25, 1915 – August 12, 1944) was the eldest of the nine children born to Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. (1888–1969) and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy (1890–1995). A US Navy lieutenant, he was killed in action during World War II while serving as a land-based patrol bomber pilot, and posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Killefer earned his A.B. at Stanford in 1938, his J.D. at Harvard in 1946, and his Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford University in 1947. He was on the legal staff of the U.S. High Commission for Germany 1951-52, First Vice President of the Export-Import Bank of Washington, D.C., 1960-62, and held executive positions at the Chrysler Corporation, 1972-76, and the U.S. Trust Company, 1976-1981.
